YouTube Blog Post

Hi, my name is Meghan Goolsby. This past week in class, we heard a great and informative presentation about the popular Internet website YouTube. As learned, YouTube is one of the worlds’ most popular video sharing websites. Registered users of the YouTube community can upload, view and share videos with the rest of the YouTube community. Unregistered users can watch most videos on the site, while registered users are allowed to upload an unlimited number of videos. Some of the videos on YouTube are only available to those users who are 18 years of age or older. These videos that have this requirement are considered by the managers of YouTube as potentially offensive content.

YouTube has only been around since February of 2005, but since its start it has gained a lot of popularity. In less than a year after the site’s launch, Internet companies such as Google sought YouTube to help enhance their companies. It already had millions of registered users, and millions of non-registered viewers that visited the site each day. On November 13, 2006, Google purchased YouTube for 1.65 Billion in Google Stock.

YouTube has given people the opportunity to upload their videos and share them with the world, giving the user full power. YouTube has made a huge impact on a variety of different aspects ranging from the presidential election, politics, promotion of talents, and commercials. The 2008 Presidential Election began utilizing YouTube as a way to promote, support, and publicize the presidential candidates. For the first time in political history, Republican and Democratic presidential candidates took part in a presidential debate through CNN and YouTube, in which viewers could submit their questions to YouTube within a certain time period, which were then submitted to the candidates. This is a huge step for presidential candidates as they can interact with the public via the Internet.

YouTube is not only popular in the United States, but in many other countries around the world. Although some countries in the world prohibit the use and viewing of YouTube videos, like China, most countries value and encourage the site. Currently, YouTube is the United State’s third most viewed site on the web, behind only Yahoo, and Google. It has passed social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook in web traffic, as well as amount of users. The amount of users signing up each day has yet to decline and continues to grow at a fast rate. The site has steadily registered approximately 20 million users per month. YouTube viewers watch over 100 million videos each day on the popular site.
